Our prayer today is this conversation brings you clarity, especially knowing many of us have different church backgrounds. Today we’re talking about the Lord, the Holy Spirit, and specifically the gift the Holy Spirit brings – praying in tongues.
God is love and His goal is we would be filled with love (Himself). 1 Corinthians 13 has been nicknamed as the love chapter and what’s beautiful is the chapter following is about gifts. We are able to express God’s love through gifts. That’s how we share His love. So we prophecy out of love, we exhort out of love, we pray in tongues out of love.
1 Corinthians 14:1 “Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries.”
Praying in tongues will carry you through difficulties and mature your relationship with the Lord. But we have to learn to pray in tongues and develop the language. We do that by praying in tongues often. When we pray this way we are praying out God’s will, not our own.
1 Corinthians 14:14-15 “For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. What is the outcome then? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also.”
